Chapter 7A Downstate Native
Bruce Alexander Campbell was born to Alexander and Marguerite Campbell in 1923. He attended grammar and high school in Yonkers, N.Y. He began college at Columbia University but left to join the Navy, became an officer and served during the Second s World War. When the war ended, he returned to Columbia and completed his undergraduate degree. Subsequently, he also earned a Masters degree from Columbia.
He was employed by the large insurance brokerage, Marsh and McLennan and worked in their New York City office, remaining there all of his career and, eventually rising to vice-president of the corporation. He retired in 1983. He had always been an avid golfer and retirement allowed more time on the course.
Bruce married Josephine Jackson (Jo), the daughter of Louis and Mae Jackson of Yonkers, N.Y. They resided, for a time, in Massapequa, Long Island and later in Yorktown Heights. And for many years, they had a lovely summer home on a lake near Gloversville, N.Y in the eastern part of Central New York.
Jo graduated from Barnard College in New York and later obtained two masters degrees from Hofstra University on Long Island near Hempstead. She was a guidance counselor at the middle school in Chappaqua in Westchester County. Bruce died in 1987 at the age of 64. Jo moved then to Flagler Beach, Florida where she continues to reside. Bruce and Jo had two children, Bruce, born in 1948 and Bonnie, born in 1953.
